Overview

Cardiogen is a synthetic tetrapeptide developed at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology as the cardiac-specific member of the ultrashort peptide bioregulator family. It shares the Ala-Glu-Asp core with Epitalon and Cortagen, with C-terminal arginine conferring claimed cardiac tissue selectivity. Western independent replication is limited; most primary data come from the Khavinson group.

Mechanism

Proposed epigenetic bioregulator mechanism: nuclear entry, DNA/histone interaction (H1, H2B, H3, H4), chromatin decondensation, and tissue-specific gene reactivation in cardiomyocytes. Organotypic myocardial cultures report stimulated cardiomyocyte proliferation with p53 downregulation and upregulation of cytoskeletal/nuclear matrix proteins.
